Kerala Kadala Curry / Chickpea curry

Kerala Kadala Curry/ Bengal Gram Curry

Kadala Curry tastes THE BEST with Puttu. And all the mallus and many non-mallus enjoy it. Recently. Here, I am going to show you one of the easiest versions of kadala curry.

Ingredients:

Black Dry Kadala/ Chickpea- 1 cup

Onion- 1 Medium size (finely chopped)

Tomato- 3 small tomatos (finely chopped)

Green chilli- 3 numbers (Split to two)

Ginger- 1 tblspn (finely chopped)

Garlic- 1 tblspn (finely chopped)

Coriander leaves- ½ cup (finely chopped)

Chicken Masala- 1 tblspn

Chilli powder- 1 tsp

Coriander poder- 1 tsp

Turmeric- ½ tsp

Curry leaves- 1 sprig

Oil- 2 tblspn

Salt- as per requirement

Method

Here in the picture, as you can see, one big bowl of kadala and another small bowl of bowl of pale substance. Don’t be puzzled. I had soaked kadala overnight in water and cooked it in cooker with a pinch of salt and turmeric. About ¼ of boiled kadala I have blended in a blender. The pale substance is the blended kadala. This is the gravy maker. This makes kadala curry, a rich gravy, thus making it a great side dish for puttu.

Lets dive into the recipe

Heat oil in a Kadai and add chopped ginger and garlic. Saute them till golden brown. As you can see, I have not used mustard seeds in this, you may them if you want.

Add curry leaves, onion and saute till the onion turns translucent.

Add tomato and green chillies and saute till tomato becomes soft.

Add turmeric powder and salt.

Add Chicken masala, coriander powder and chilli powder. Saute till the raw flavour fades.

Add the cooked kadala and some water. I add the stock of cooked kadala.

Bring it to boil and add the blended kadala to it.

Boil till the water doesn’t stand separate from gravy.

Add coriander leaves.

Serve it with steaming rice puttu and I assure, your family will love this. Do let me know your success stories.

Here I have served it with rice puttu, which I feel is the best combo. But it goes well with rice, idli or chapati too.

Enjoy!
